Leading make up artist Nadine Monley usually spends her time making women’s skin glow from the pages of In Style, Russh and Vogue but now she’s focussing on invigorating the outlook for pale men.
With her own brand the Beauty Dept. she developed Man Tan, perfect gay grooms after a sun-kissed photo finish or who want to look refreshed the moment their honeymoon begins.
Why do men need a different product to women for tanning?
Male skin tends to be a little more sensitive, so the combination of essential oils treat the skin, moisturise and leave you with a beautiful golden glow.
Developed specifically for men, Man Tan is formulated with all natural and organic ingredients, which warms up the skin tone leaving a natural, golden tan.
The scent of Man Tan is its biggest draw card with uplifting and revitalising natural aroma of lavender, rosemary and lemongrass. There was a long time spent on the scent and selecting the right essential oils to benefit a male skin texture.
How important are natural ingredients?
Man Tan has a unique and light scent, which is formulated with beautiful essential oils and Australian-made ingredients.
I believe that oils make a big difference in skin care, that is why I continue to develop products that are oil-based and make a difference to how the skin looks and feels.
Man Tan also keeps its environmental footprint small by using recyclable and biodegradable packaging.
How should men apply Man Tan?
Using the product sparingly, start with the face and gently blend down your neck, I like to just put on a light tan here as it picks up the skin tone and looks like you have been on holiday.
I suggest that you apply the tan after you have had a shower and the skin is warm, the product will blend better with the warmth.
After lightly applying on the face, work your way down the body, leaving your feet last as this only needs a little product.
Once finished, it’s important to wash your hands and clean your fingernails to avoid any staining. Man Tan is a gradual tan so you have control over the desired colour.
If you are applying fake tan for a wedding day, when should you slap it on?
I suggest using the product about a month before your wedding so you can work out your desired colour and have the application technique down to a fine art. Man Tan is super easy to use, the great thing about this product is it fades with time, just like a normal tan.
How did you become a make up artist?
Make up is such a powerful tool for making people feel and look beautiful, being a part of this process is amazing for me. I had acne as a teenager so I think that is where my obsession with skin comes from.
How did the Beauty Dept come about?
It was a process of unfolding. I realised at the time, which was about seven years ago, that there was a hole in the market for chemical free products that I wanted to use while I was doing make up. That is how my obsession with oils started and the amazing things they did for the skin. I started the process organically by making oils in my kitchen and realising that I had reached a point where I needed someone else too help me, which lead to the process of sourcing a developer.
